Massimo Vignelli talks about his book design process in this video commissioned by Mohawk Papers. His process is inspiring and charming, as is his preference for sketching instead of computer generated layouts. Vignelli also stresses the importance of the grid in his work, saying "the grid is like underwear: you wear it, but it's not exposed."
Massimo Vignelli is renowned for his design work in many areas: packaging, furniture, branding, books, infographics. His belief that 6 typefaces are all one needs to do good design is an endless source of debate in the design world. In 2009, he created the Vignelli Canon, a book which presents the most important design principles as deemed by its author.
However, beautiful books are produced every year, all over the world, including here, in Canada, as it can be seen in the annual Alcuin Awards. This fall, don't miss the Alcuin Awards ceremonies on October 2nd in Vancouver, and October 7th in Toronto, to celebrate the 2013 winners.
